Features

The Roomba 690 has a circular, black-silver body measuring 13” wide and 3.7” tall. The Roomba 690 is comparatively the same size as Bissell SmartClean 1974 (about 3”). Owing to its smaller texture, it is efficiently able to clean under couches, lounge systems, and assorted furniture. It is somewhat heavy for its size, weighing 3.36 kg. There is a large silver-colored CLEAN button on top of the vacuum which is used to operate it. Below it, there is a Home icon to send it back to the dock. Above the Home button, there is Spot Cleaning icon and above that there is a backlit panel display for error, Wi-Fi and battery status.

The back of the machine has an attached dustbin (removable) while the front comes with RCON sensor and bumper. Underneath the bot, we can see cliff sensors (to detect edges/stairs/walls/corners etc), a front roller, 2 main wheels, 2 roller brushes, charging port, and a side brush. The iRobot Roomba 690 is built with a recharging dock, plus dual-mode virtual wall beacon. The beacon runs on 4 AA batteries. The virtual wall is slim, a square figure set with a back switch to toggle between Slide Up and Slide Down modes. The former creates a digital barrier to keep the vacuum out of rooms/spaces where it is unwanted; while the other mode is responsible for starting a ‘halo’ barrier measuring 4 ft in diameter.

The greatest achievement iRobot has been able to make regarding this piece of tech is the integration of Amazon’s latest Alexa voice control software. Your machine can clean your house according to your voice commands. Schedule your cleaning date with the iRobot HOME App, compatible with Amazon Alexa as well as Google Assistant, and remotely clean your house/office/premises. Open the Amazon Alexa app, go to Skills menu, select iRobot Home and select Enable button- that’s all there is to have your Roomba 690 started. To operate the device use simple voice commands through the Alexa voice device. Then you can tell it to go back to the dock, ask for status updates or simply ask where it is.

Utilizing an array of smart sensor technologies, the Roomba 690 takes multiple decisions in a minute and banks on the one with maximum output, at lowest energy expense. As mentioned before, the Dirt Detect sensors immediately recognize the most filthy corners & edges of the room. Battery life was suitable enough to last for 70 minutes while the cleaning was satisfactory. The battery lasted longer than Dyson 360 Eye (45 min) for the same time period and the same rate of work.

How iRobot Roomba 690 Works

The device has been developed to clean your premises with utmost precision and extreme accuracy. It does so with the help of 3-Stage Cleaning System and Dual Multi-Purpose Brushes that are supposed to pick up the smallest debris to the largest dirt slob. The Dirt Detector sensors built into it enables you to have the more concentrated areas of your rooms and premises (where traffic is higher) to become spotless. The filters capture fine dust particles and pieces of debris operated by the intelligent sensors that can operate under and around the furniture. The Auto Adjust Cleaning Head option alters its height to accommodate the cleaning of expensive carpets and hardwood floors.

When we take a minute look into the workings of the Roomba 690, we will see that the main gearing force for the cleaning spree is the 3-stage cleaning system combined with double multi-surface brushes- designed to provide you with the best performance. The critically engineered edge-sweeping brush is specially crafted at 27 degrees angle to sweep away dirt from the corners and wall-edges. This Edge-Sweeping Brush and vacuum suction jointly attack every unwanted particle in the room.

The Dual Multi-Surface brushes deserve special mention. This is because of the fact that it is the only leading robotic vacuum product to feature 2 cleaning brushes; one to loosen the dirt on the surface and another to have it picked up. Have a fresh and clean room devoid of outside dirt, dust, pet hair and numerous debris which try to soil your precious flooring space.

Setting Roomba 690

The post on iRobot Roomba 690 review also covers the setting guide of the appliance. Setting up the device is an even easier piece of cake. Once it is plugged into the dock, flip over the vacuum, have the yellow plastic tab sticking out from the battery pulled out and stick the robot on the dock and charge it for 3 full hours. When charging is complete, download iRobot app (Apple App Store/ Google Play Store), follow on-screen directions. Create an account and pair up your gadget with Wi-Fi and voila!

The app is itself quite simple, unthinking and self-explanatory by nature. It works by a single touch of the CLEAN option on the Main Menu. At the bottom screen, there are 3 other menus: Lifetime Performance Log, Weekly Schedule, and More. The first option keeps a record of the bot’s cleaning activities- you can check info like the number of jobs undertaken, total duration, and no. of Dirt Detector sensor usage. Use the Weekly Schedule to time your cleaning; just select those specific days and specific times when the work has to take place. The More tab contains the Locate Roomba button (when clicked, it will play a music to help you locate it in the house/premises). Besides Locate Roomba, it also includes the manual, instructions, FAQs and settings.

Performance

When it was tested to see how it performed, it was found that the iRobot Roomba 690 lived up to the assurances delivered by the manufacturing company. The suction force was powerful and after an hour of suctioning, the dustbin was filled up to the brim. The problem, however, lay with the navigating abilities installed in the sensors. It had some difficulties getting on top of a relatively low pile rug. But it managed to circumvent the problem by reversing itself onto the rug itself. Amazing!

Another glitch observed in the working included that it does not particularly work well on dark-colored flooring or black rugs. This disadvantage is caused by the fact that several robotic vacuums with infrared sensors are limited to working on light-colored surfaces. The iRobot’s 690 faces the same problem and according to the manuals, 690’s cliff sensors can confuse dark colors with the edge of a stair.

It was also not great for docking itself. Unless manually shifted close to the docking station, it wandered off everywhere else besides the docking point. It failed with: Alexa voice commands, the button on the top and also the app itself.

We also get the lack of app-based control which should have been a must addition to this cleaner. The work would have been cut out for us if we could manipulate the 690 with an Android mobile. Besides, manually displacing any smart gadget object is something downgraded in this digital age. Last but not the least, the Roomba 690 comes with a slight noise problem. This is no different than any other state-of-the-art vacuum cleaner; although you might consider taking your calls elsewhere when the 690 is running.

Pros:

  • Simple voice-operated device; both Alexa and Google Assistant compatible
  • Smaller compact shape enables it to go underneath furniture which is hard to clean with conventional vacuum systems
  • Easy to operate model; requires simple Wi-Fi connectivity in your mobile phone
  • Smart recharging dock; enables recharging of 4 nos. of AA batteries for the virtual beacon
  • 3-stage cleaning system accompanied by dual multi-purpose brushes for your ultimate cleaning experience
  • Brush installed at an angle of 27 degrees to provide the best cleaning
  • State-of-the-art engineering and craftsmanship by iRobot

Cons:

  • Faces difficulties when it comes to cleaning dark surfaces like black colored floors or dark rugs
  • Bulky weight (3.36 kgs/7.4 lbs)
  • Observed facing problems when instructed to return to docking point (had to be done manually)
  • Wi-Fi connectivity supported only on the 2.4 GHz band
  • Confuses dark colors as an edge or stair
  • Noise reduction features not observed
